Volunteer at The HEAL Farm

Our volunteers are central to the responsible stewardship of our land and our programs.

Volunteering at The HEAL Project is a rewarding experience. In exchange for your donated time you can expect to:

  • Have plenty of outdoor, educational fun

  • Make new friends (human and 🐌!)

  • Maybe even improve your green thumb!

We especially love to cultivate relationships with volunteers who are interested in being part of our community long-term. Some volunteers move into leadership roles, like helping staff our Community Farm Days and other group events on the farm.

In addition to opportunities for individuals, we offer customized experiences for corporate volunteering as well as school and youth group volunteering.

Ongoing Volunteering

If you’re interested in ongoing volunteering at The HEAL Project Farm, you will be asked to complete a volunteer application to help us match your abilities and schedule with our farm needs. After applying, you’ll complete a volunteer orientation, scheduled roughly every three months.

Next Volunteer Orientation:

No orientation is scheduled at this time, though we anticipate our applications for the new program season will be posted in March 2025, with our first orientation in early April.

Drop-in Volunteering

Anyone can join us for an upcoming Community Farm Day! No experience necessary.

Volunteering FAQs

  • Volunteers can help out with lots of different tasks around the farm, like:

    • General Maintenance: weeding & mulching

    • Planting and seeding of “fail-safe” crops

    • Harvest & Transplant: harvesting, washing, packing, and counting produce for the Farmers Market

    • Donation delivery to local partners

  • Volunteers ages 10 and older are welcome and encouraged to join us! Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver prior to participation, and volunteers ages 10-15 must volunteer with a parent or guardian.

  • No. Some volunteers help out full days every week while others give two to three hours per week or per month. All commitments are greatly appreciated, and we do our best to accommodate schedules. You will have the chance to indicate how often you would like to volunteer in the Volunteer Application.

  • Generally regular volunteers can help out on the farm between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, and on one Saturday and one Sunday per month. Ongoing volunteers who have completed training or have specialized skills and have volunteered a substantial number of hours on the farm can arrange additional times on an individual basis.

  • We review different volunteer roles on the farm, prepare you with some safety information and a basic overview of the space our farm occupies. You’ll meet some volunteers and staff, and should leave with a good sense of how you’ll be able to contribute.

  • We have an open Community Farm Day once per month, which is a great opportunity to dip your toes into working with us. On these days, you can try out different farm tasks and meet other volunteers.

  • Yes! We periodically schedule fun volunteer events like intergenerational volunteer days, days for kids under the age of 10, and season-specific harvesting days when we have big bumper crops of things like tomatoes and strawberries!

  • You bet! Taking home some fresh fruits and veggies - or even flowers, when they’re available - is one of the best parts of being a volunteer at The HEAL Project.
